Kashan is the first of the large oases along the Qom-Kerman road, which runs along the edge of the Great Desert. Kashan rug designs are perhaps some of the most popular of all Persian Designs. These rugs are highly characterized by both the use of color, designs and design elements. While there are many exceptions, traditionally, Kashan colors most often used are red (in the field), blue (in the border) and white. At the end of the 19th century, the weavers in Kashan began to produce high quality wool rugs and carpets. The very best carpets are known as Motashem. They often have medallion designs but allover Kashans are not uncommon.
